One of my favorite parts of fieldwork was learning the intricacies of
local medicinal knowledge
In an area of rural Cameroon where people practice subsistence farming and have few outside resources, local medicinal knowledge is detailed and complex. Cameroon is home to around 8,500 plant species, of which at least 3,000 are known to be useful (Onana 2010:557). My research did not particularly focus on medicinal aspects of plants, but such knowledge was always an integral part of my documentation efforts. I am most fascinated by the combination of different plants and plant parts to treat ailments and how this intricate pharmacological knowledge came to be.
In addition to using plants as medicine, people in Nyanjida also use insects and parts of animals for preventative care and treating ailments.
